Custom designed advent calendar done in 4mm ply. Lighting done via 3 tea lights & optical fiber.
Nice! How did you make the stars glow?
Stars were holes lasered into the 4mm ply that matched some optical fiber I purchased. Fiber was super-glued (CA glue) into each hole, then the ends were combined and a tea light was placed to power the fibers.
@Grandpa_Laser , nice! I’ve been planning to do something similar with larger size fishing line. Do you see the need/performance increase for going with optical fiber over a fishing line?
Also, did you just paint the end of the red one or did you do something different?
Ive never tried fishing line so i cant speak to that. For the red end, i just used a red sharpie on that fiber dot.
The fishing line does not transmit much light, the optical fiber is specially adapted for the transmission of light, possible to dismantle it on children’s toys like those used for balls, fairs, etc. Otherwise, China sells them in ready-made kits or in rolls, there are also micro LEDs, if you know how to solder, it’s not complicated at all. Good creation
That’s what I imagined. Just wondering because I already had the larger fishing line. I’ll just have to modify my part files to match the optical fiber if there is a large difference.

excellent base to start a project, for 2 euros…
It is also possible to recycle the FTP fiber from internet boxes.

I think a spool of fishing line costs more.
@Ganitta28 & @MikeyH , thanks for the links. I’ll check those out. Not super concerned with the cost, more just not wanting to waste the fishing line since I don’t fish. But I guess I can use it to hang some paintings or laser engravings. ![]()
