I tried using the light burn version of the grid test on the dark wood and it started moving up randomly on the wood. I assumed it was the frame that was moving as I got excited and forgot to bolt it down. However, I tried it on a piece of poplar wood using an old S9 grid test and the same thing started to happen? The laser seems to work fine when I engraved my logo and a simple square.
I asked because I have seen some very strange (and funny) symptoms that are related to Lightburn’s internal protection against piracy. This I would just be able to exclude from your problem, nothing else
I finally got time to try working on the laser and I am still having the same issues. I tried it three times, the first time it started fine as usual and then it started to walk towards the top. The second time it did the exact same thing, except this time I sat and watched the Lightburn program to see if i noticed anything, and I did. During the run It said it lost the connection, then I looked over to the laser and laser head was still moving, but the laser had no power. I shut it off after that point. I decided to try replacing the USB cord with one from my Sculpfun S9 which I know works to see if that was the issue. I also used a different image as well to see if they were any changes. Survey says no changes and it still image walked. I also pulled all the connections apart and checked them for broken wires as well as tightened all the bolts.
I am going on out a limb here and guessing that the image walk happens when it looses connections and then fixes itself. Below are the three tests I did, the double burn test are the first two and the bridge image was the last one with the USB cord swap.
