Anyone use parametric modeling software to design projects

I’m just wondering if some or maybe many of you use parametric CAD programs like Free CAD or Fusion 360 to design your projects and then import the project to lightburn and use your laser to create the project.

Sure. But no 3D projects, of course. But if I need to design a plate with different screw holes, for example, it’s much more convenient to use Fusion 360 and export the DXF to LB.

If you are OK with a 2D parametric design program, I use Cuttle It works well with LB. You can either export a SVG file, or cut and paste between Cuttle and LB. They have a free version, which allows you download 10 files per month that are on the “free” plan. The Pro version is subscription based.

If you want to test Cuttle, I have some Cuttle parametric designs on my website that are labeled Free. https://www.layeredpaperart.com/cuttle-templates

I did a reproduction circular slide rule with a GCMC program spitting out either G-Code or SVG images:

The scales are laser-printed or pen-plotted and the decks & cursor are laser-cut / engraved, with the GCMC program producing the CNC / laser files.

I suspect it’s the same character flaw leading one to use OpenSCAD for solid modeling:

The OpenSCAD program also produces an SVG outline of the faceplate that I tarted up in Inkscape for inkjet printing & laser cuttery:

Put it all together:

No CAD drawing ability required: it’s all source code …
