Apply mask doesn't work

Trying to remove seagull (a closed shape) vector from image. Tried grouping, adding square around seagull, putting lines and image on same layer, layer set to “line” and doubling lines to create islands. Vector will set to tool layer but image won’t. They do group together but Mask is not available. The closest I can come is for the image to crop to seagull.

I think this is what you’re asking.
Make sure your seagull isn’t grouped with anything else and that it’s a closed shape. Select your photo then shift select the seagull. Tools Menu> Cut Shapes. Then you can delete where the seagull was. If you still want the seagull shape duplicate it first since the shape will disappear after the cut operation.

Thanks for your response. I tried your method and it worked a couple times but now I can’t duplicate it. I’ve found a way that works consistantly for me: draw a square outside of the shape (seagull) on the same layer as the shape, put shape and square on same layer and group together then select that group and Shift-select the image. Then “Apply Mask to Image” will be available in right-click menu and that works. The image can be on any layer and the square can be any size larger than the shape, even larger than the image. If the square is smaller than the image the image outside the square will be removed. Multiple squares or circles etc. can create multiple “islands/moats” effect like the puppy example in the “Online Documentation”.
Thanks again.
