Artifact appearing in Offset Fill mode

Hello,

I’m experiencing an issue in LightBurn when using the Offset Fill mode.

On a specific design, an unexpected artifact appears between the letters “N” and “T” in the word “GARANTI.”
This artifact does not exist in the original vector file and does not show up in any other fill mode.

Here are the details:

  • The issue only occurs when using Offset Fill
  • Other modes (like Line Fill) do not produce this problem
  • The text has been checked and appears clean (no overlapping nodes or stray paths)
  • The artifact is visible in the preview and would be engraved

I’ve attached a screenshot showing the issue in preview mode.

Could you please help me understand:

  • What might be causing this behavior?
  • If this is a known issue with Offset Fill?
  • Any workaround or settings I should adjust?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Marine

If you look at the vectors for the T and the N you’ll likely find a small segment that overlaps itself, and that will cause issues with Offset Fill.

Having said that, Offset Fill was not intended to just use for everything. The best thing you could do for the quality of this piece is engrave everything except the ovals using a normal Fill mode set to “Fill Shapes Individually”, and then run just the ovals with another layer set to Offset Fill.

If you attach the lbrn project file to your post someone can have a look for the error.

Using Offset Fill, artifacts are not unexpected. In fact, I sometimes use this to give “character” to my work on cutting boards.

I have also found Offset Fill can take more time than Fill or Flood Fill.

Fill = quality.
Offset Fill = speed.
Check Preview with both.

I use offset fill very often, and this is the first time I’ve seen a difference in the preview when switching between the two without changing anything.
I add File + Preview, thanks

Zoom in on the T, here:

You can see the green dot has another just under it. Zoom in a little more and you can see a small line shifted inward:

Offset fill doesn’t handle things like this well, but it’s an easy fix. Just delete that green node in Edit Nodes mode to get this:

And no more glitch:

And a lot more.
Are your shapes an image trace?
