Atomstack A5 Pro stopped working overnight - seeking troubleshooting advice.

As the title said - I left my 1.5 year old laser running a job overnight and when I came in the morning the overnight job had finished, but when I went to start the next job my PC would no longer recognise the device.

The error I am given is: “device descriptor request failed” with a code 43 and an error code of 0000002b

Things I have already tried

  • A different computer (reported same USB error)
  • Reinstalled drivers
  • Uninstalled the USB and reinstalled after a PC restart
  • Disabled and reenabled the USB after a PC restart
  • New USB cable
  • I ordered and installed a new mainboard for the laser (problem persists)

The laser still powers on and the fan on the laser head spins up.

Any advice at this point would be very welcomed as I am at my wits end and I really don’t want to buy a new laser (and if I do it won’t be an atomstack as I don’t want to buy lasers that break down 6 months out of warranty).

I realize this doesn’t address your question, but DO NOT DO THAT EVER!!! It is not safe to operate a laser unattended, it’s a major fire risk. What if the stepper motor quit for whatever reason and the laser just kept burning in one location without moving. Before you know it you have a fire.

Now to your issue at hand. I believe you will need to contact Atomstack directly for support on this error. This is not a standard GRBL type of error and most likely Manufacturer Specific.

I don’t normally leave it overnight, but I had a deadline (that I missed anyways thanks to all of this) We do have a fire alarm and electronics fire extinguisher near the the laser cutter in case of situations like this though (our 3D printer sits nearby also).

The errors I gave aren’t the ones given by the laser - this is how it is reporting in Windows Device Manager. Normally it should report as a COM port, but windows is rejecting the USB.

I am contacting atomstack but as it is out of warranty I wanted to try other forums as I don’t expect atomstack to be particularly helpful due to the warranty problem.

These are all things I would have tried as well. Was the mainboard direct from Atomstack or third party? How were you able to program the mainboard without Windows communication?

Maybe try disconnecting all cables from the mainboard except for power and USB. It might be something causing a fault and preventing communication. Just a wild guess here.

The mainboard I had to order via 3rd party as atomstack no longer sell it as a spare part. It’s just a plug and play PCB board that requires the computer to have an up to date version of the CH340 driver installed to communicate (I did reinstall these as part of the troubleshooting).

The A5 Pro is a basic hobbyist laser with no frills - there’s no communication back from the laser head, it doesnt even have limit switches.

I will try disconnecting the cables, thank you for the suggestion.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the CH340 driver. If your PC was on all night, a Windows update might have corrupted the driver.
