When I calibrate the axis on my machine, are the new steps only saved to the current profile? For example, if I were to calibrate, then later load my machine settings that I use for my rotary, would the calibration carry over or would I have to do it again and save it to that specific file?
Only if your machine settings where different. There would be no reason to alter the calibration settings.
That answer is a little confusing. Obviously the machine settings would be different or I would not have a reason to load another file.
I guess a better way to word my original question would be is the calibration stored in Lightburn or written to the machine when the settings are changed?
They would be stored on the controller.
