Strange problem that I’ve had before but can’t remember how to fix.
Sculppfun S30 been using for years now and had this problem a few months ago but for the life of me can’t figure out how to fix.
Unit powers up and will home just fine. Will move X and Y no issues. I’ll type some font and tell it to frame. Will move up and over to the starting origin no problem (User or Absolute, doesn’t matter), but then motors lock up and just sits there. Won’t move.
When I try to use Jog button, it does the same thing, motors lock up and won’t move. Hit Home and moves X and Y to home no problem…
I can move it manually no problem. Nothing blocking or obstructing gantry. I’ve tried new USB cable and my laptop and same issue - locks up when trying to frame or jog. I’ve checked all cables and all good as it will move X and Y but only when homing. I’ve reset my Device Settings back to my save Default state and still nothing. I’m at wits end.
Get this - it seems to only get ‘stuck’ when FRAMING or JOGGING. If I hit START, the laser fires up and starts working correctly and begins lasering the project correctly!! I’m so confused…
Sounds like a very weird issue. Maybe try to install LB on another PC and check if it behaves the same. If not, it’s a bug you encounter and a fresh install might help. You might also try to install LB 2.0, it is installed in parallel to the older version and might also give some hints.
Feel free to unplug the motors and/or Laser module from the control board on the engraver before powering the laser engraver up. Temporarily unplugging the motors still allows us to request reports from the engraver. This can help ease concerns with misbehaving hardware.
Some laser engraver controllers apply the ‘Maximum travel rate’ in mm/minute to the jog or whitespace-move when not engraving.
Jogging in LightBurn would apply the speeds in the Move window to jogging.
Comparing these speeds may offer clarity.
Please use a screen capture tool to capture the Move Window in LightBurn.
After you capture and save the image, you can drag it and drop it into a reply here. You can also use the Upload icon to put the saved image in your reply. The upload icon is the Up-arrow above computer Icon in the row across the top of the reply box. Don’t worry about the size. I’ll crop it or shrink the image if necessary.
Also, after establishing a connection with the laser Engraver, in the Console window in LightBurn, enter the following:
$$
followed by the Enter key,
then enter:
$i
followed by the enter key.
The $i report will show us the firmware version number and ideally a ‘Build date’ and some Build option codes. Please select and copy the text from this report in the Console window in LightBurn and paste it into a reply here.
I doubt I’d need all the codes from the Settings ($$) report. The stepper motor power and delay settings next to $0 and $1, homing settings $20 through $29 and Maximum travel rate, $110-$112 might help us discover what’s happening here.
Feel free to copy the whole setting report and paste it into a reply here or copy and paste only the needed settings from the report if you prefer.
Thank you for the framing/jogging details - that was the issue!!
I’m always switching back and forth between 3 different lasers (Fiber, Diode and RF), Lightburn often keeps small settings changes from one laser to another. It seems it had changed my speed from 6000mm/m to 18mm/m!!
Technically they do not lock up but they are in the process of moving, just extremely slow. The will stop once they finished the move after a minute or so
