when I try to burn imported line art or clip art some images will burn while others will not. The images that will not burn can be traced and then they burn but I get a double line in the images. Lightburn as far as I can see has no center line trace.
Any idea as to why some images will burn while others will not unless they are traced
A full screenshot of LightBurn with an example of an image that doesn’t burn would be useful to understand the problem.
Also, can you clarify what you mean by the image will not burn? As in the laser doesn’t fire at all? Or the laser fires but doesn’t burn the material? Or the laser fires, leaves, an image but isn’t what you want? If it’s any of the latter ones can you describe the laser and material you are using?
What I didn’t realize is that LB recognizes the file as a img file . I don’t want that. Once it is traced it recognizes it as a line so it burns fast but has the double lines. So I assume I would have to somehow change the file (.gif) so LB would recognize it as a line? Or do I have to find a certain .ext such as a .tif or .btmap ?
There are two fundamental formats for engraving: vector and raster.
Images that are bitmaps of pixels are considered raster. This includes gif, tif, bitmap, png, jpg, and more. Basically anything that’s an “image”.
Vector designs are represented using lines, curves, and primitives and are stored as mathematical representations of those components. This allows for those designs to be scaled up and down without losing quality. Common formats for vector art include SVG, AI, eps, PDF, DXF. Note that some of these formats can embed raster images as well so can add a bit of confusion but generally they’re associated with storing vector data.
As you’ve discovered, tracing is one technique to convert from raster to vector. LightBurn trace will give you the two lines for line art as it is designed to capture the entire area of the line. And yes, there’s no centerline trace in LightBurn as yet. Other vector illustration tools like Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator do include center line trace capabilities.
well that clears up a lot thanks I am doing a fund raising project for our 11 and under girls ball team and want to burn two crossed bats and a ball into the project. But I have to burn 200 of these. The best I can get the img to burn is 4 min. But the traced img burns in 20 sec.
What I originally thought was a problem was I was trying to burn an img which with my original settings was going to take 10 min which made the burn process not look right because of its slowness
I guess I can try and find some vector files and try inkscape
If you find vector files those can be imported directly into LightBurn assuming it’s one of the supported file types.
You could attempt to draw these in LightBurn as well if you were sufficiently ambitious.
