I’ve been using Lightburn for about a year and during that time had made numerous failed attempts at getting a camera up and running. I finally just left it in place over the laser engraver and burned an alignment outline on paper for accurately placing parts that couldn’t reference off my x0,y0 fence setup.
A few weeks ago I got the notice to update to Version 2.1. I made the update problem free and continued just using the laser engraver.
Yesterday though after reading about an improved camera setup in Version 2.1x I decided to give it a try. Well, I got it pretty darn close on the first try. I played with it a bit adjusting scale and positioning and things got better.
This morning I decided to use what I’d learned and do it a second time with 9 pattern captures instead of the default 5. Then I used what I learned yesterday and dialed in the accuracy.
I can only say “what a difference!” The entire design of the camera setup in Ver. 2.1x is megaleaps above the old system. If you haven’t given it a try I’d suggest doing so.
It’s great to finally hear a positive story from people’s experience with version 2.1
I myself haven’t experienced a single problem upgrading to the latest version, (haven’t been able to try/test the new camera alignment system yet, but I’m looking forward to testing it).
I hope you get the same joy and precision from your camera system as I have.
Btw., I’m amazed by all the strange feedback which is mainly from people who either know nothing or very little about their machines and/or LightBurn. Otherwise I can’t understand how so many can’t see that their measurement units may not match metric or imperial and can fix it themselves in LB, without proclaiming that LB has ruined their laser or computer…, or giving the new camera alignment an honest chance or at least searching and reading what 100 others have proclaimed about the same thing - and have gotten the same simple solution.

It was hard to watch him demonstrate the new lens calibration in internal meetings and then not shout it from the rooftops. I felt like I needed to pick my jaw up off the floor when I saw it.
We’ve been saying ‘soon’ and ‘it’s being actively worked on’ for a long time.
I’m so glad it’s out in the world for folks to use and enjoy.
Some folks don’t share our awareness of ‘units of measure’. Some just know that a spruce 2x4 and a 4x8 sheet of plywood use different units. It’s taken for granted.
To be hardware-agnostic the software has to communicate using the units the machine expects, and to accommodate the user’s preferences, we offer an option to work in inches. Adam even demonstrated an easter egg that allowed him to work in Bananas as a unit of length. I asked for the 'Smoot’, the ‘half-giraffe’ and the ‘football stadium’ to be added to a list of possible units of measure to draw awareness to the importance of units of measure but alas, that idea died on the vine.
I think folks see an unfamiliar number and immediately correct it without confirming the units of measure. LightBurn intentionally preserves the cut settings (practically all the settings and preferences) to minimize the friction when updating. The Dev team is actively seeking cases where settings are not preserved in efforts to improve the update process.
That’s what I mean, but these are laser scanners we’re working with, not baking machines, and even here my wife will quickly figure out that an ounce of salt is 28 times more than a gram and the bread will probably have to be thrown out - if she uses the wrong unit of measurement
