Camera View and "Update Overlay" view not the same

Hello,

I have a xTool D1 Pro with extended rails and the “Update Overlay” view is not the same size as the Camera Control Live View of entire bed.

I have a Lightburn 5MP - 90 degree camera and a bed size of 420 x 936 and the camera is mounted 23.5 inches from the bed surface.
I did all the camera configuration and alignment with no issues and the targets worked out correctly.
Now the “update layout” view is cropped by about 10-15% on each end of the bed as shown in the attached image.
How do I get the Update Layout view to cover the whole bed?

Thanks,

Can you go to Edit->Settings and enable “Rotate captures 90 degrees” under the Camera settings to see if that makes a difference?

I did try that and it gets worse, cuts off more of the image.

Not sure in that case. A number of people having a high aspect ratio machine have been seeing this and I haven’t yet seen a definitive answer to this.

@JTR may have some input on this as he had suggested a similar fix for a different case.

I plugged your dimensions into our Camera Selection Helper, and the minimum mounting height for the 90 degree camera is 25.95"

We advise mounting an inch or two above that minimum height, to provide some margin for error. It looks like your current preview image is very tight around the workspace, if indeed it’s capturing the entire space at all.

I recommend raising the camera up a few inches plus, then running the Camera Alignment Wizard again. Keep the ‘Rotate captures 90 degrees’ setting enabled, and take care to mark the target markers as precisely as possible and in their numbered order.

I also notice that your dimensions do not match xTool’s extension setup guide here:

They’ve got 430 for width and 930 for height. The height difference is minimal enough that the suggestion on mounting the camera higher still stands - perhaps those instructions are outdated, but I could not find any newer guidance. You may need to adjust those dimensions.

If you have not already, make sure you have also switched your xTool into extension mode using xTool’s Creative Space App.

Thanks, I’ll mount the camera a little higher and see if that makes the difference.
Appreciate it.

Hi,

Based on the recommendations above - the camera is now mounted 26.5" above the bed and the issue is still present. The top and bottom pieces (10-15% of bed) is not shown in the “Update Overlay” view, as per attached images. I repeated the camera calibration and alignment also shown in the pictures.

XCS software and firmware are up to date as well and laser extension is selected.

Thanks

26.5 is only about half an inch above the minimum mounting height, and I still don’t think I can see the edges of your machine on the right and left in the preview capture. Try going to the high end and a bit beyond the 1-2 inches above the minimum height I mentioned earlier, to at least 28 inches - more wouldn’t hurt, even up to 30 inches.

Did you adjust your laser’s dimensions in LightBurn to match xTool’s values of 930 for height and 430 for width?

ok, I’ll go higher, and yes, I did adjust the bed parameters to 940 x 420.
I’ll change to 930 x 430 just to be safe

OK, so now camera is mounted at 30 inches. It did seem to make some improvement, but it seems the camera would have to be mounted another 5 inches or so higher to see the whole bed.
So minimum distance is 25.95", but to see the whole bed it looks like the camera would need to be mounted at about 36" which is ridiculously high and quite the range for mounting positions.

I have attached the current “Update Overlay” view.

Thanks

It’s crucial that the camera be able to capture your entire workspace - if it needs to be mounted at 36" in order to do that, that is what you’ll need to do. I agree that’s outside of the expected necessary height, but it is the only option.

thanks, appreciate it.

Can you change the bed size to 930 for width and 430 for height?

That wouldn’t work properly, the origin/orientation is set in the machine’s firmware, so the axes need to be adjusted accordingly.

I have now set my camera to 34 inches above the bed and now the whole bed is viewable.

thanks again.

Nice. Can you confirm whether or not enabling the “Rotate captures 90 degrees” in Settings for camera affects the outcome?

if I rotate the camera it cuts the bed in half, you lose the ends, the camera has to be oriented correctly.

Actually I wasn’t referring to the rotation of the camera itself. I’m talking about the option in Edit->Settings called “Rotate captures 90 degrees”.

Tyler mentioned this in Post #5.

it’s the same scenario, it cuts the image off at the width of the bed, you don’t see the whole bed.
Image #1 is normal “capture”, Image #2 is “Rotate Capture 90 degrees”.

Hope that helps.

Great. Thank you for confirming that. There are a number of people going through a similar issue with extended beds so helps to understand what specifically addresses the issue.
