So I installed a new Lightburn 8MP 90deg lens camera. The camera lens correction wizard and the camera alignment wizard both completed successfully, and I get a live view in the camera control window. I choose update overlay and get the image on the main window. I burn a small circle in the middle to check alignment and it requires a small correctional Y-shift of 0.4 to get it perfectly aligned. That done I choose to save settings and remove the wood sheet used for alignment pattern. I place a small workpiece on the bed and click Update Overlay. Nothing… No image on the worksheet. Image is still live in the camera control window just no overlay update. I try selecting camera=none and then revert back to the Lightburn camera. No change, still no overlay available.
I repeat the whole process again with exactly the same result. After saving the settings (same small Y-shift was required) I cannot get Lightburn to update the overlay and it remains with no image. Have rebooted PC and restarted Lightburn several times and it makes no difference.
I ran through the install again but no, after the initial camera alignment it will no longer update.
Further info: This is a new Lightburn camera but prior to this I was using a different Lightburn camera - a 5MP 120deg device which the new 8MP 90deg camera was to replace (it’s got better resolution and shows finer detail). I forgot the 5MP was actually still connected when I went through the install of the new one, I had meant to disconnect it. I wondered later if having TWO Lightburn cameras connected at the same time was causing the issue. Anyway, after I realised the 5MP cam was still connected I unplugged it and ran through the install routine again (lens correction, camera alignment) but the result was the same - no overlay updates. After that I went back to square one and restored an image of my C: drive back to the condition it was in just prior to installing the new 8MP camera. That was actually faster than setting up the old camera again from scratch So right now my computer is as it was, the 5MP camera functions perfectly like it used to, and I’m wondering how I might approach installing the 8MP camera again.
Edit: Tentative steps… I plugged the 8MP camera in and now both Device Manager and Lightburn Camera Control window shows 2 instances of “Lightburn Camera”. I was just wondering if it was getting confused but no, there are definitely 2 separate instances. Pity they use the same name though… The 5MP camera is still the one configured for use and it updates the overlay just fine.
Edit2: Left both 8MP and 5MP cams connected, I can select either in Lightburn and both will update the overaly. Of course the 8MP camera is not configured so the image is distorted. Closed Lightburn and opened it again and overlay still works for both cameras. Saving a new disk image for C: drive before I go any further, then I will try to configure the 8MP camera again with lens correction and camera alignment.
Edit3: OK well this time it seems to work… for now at least. Did I mention running the lens calibration routine 6 times in a row is a PITA? lol! I’ve been at this all day.
Well it’s doing it again, refuses to update the overlay view on the worksheet. It had been working yesterday even through computer reboot and powering the laser engraver on and off. Now I come to use it and it simply won’t update. In the camera control window I find it has also frozen - I only seem to get a single frame there rather than showing a live feed. If I select Camera=None then reselect the Lightburn camera I get a new single frame, but no live stream. At this point I’m beginning to suspect the camera hardware? What do you think?
Are you plugging into a USB3 port? Can you try changing ports, preferably USB3.
Why kind of cable are you using to connect? What’s the length? You might want to try a different cable to rule out any potential interference issues.
One other thing to potentially try is to switch the Camera Capture System in LB Settings to Default Capture System instead of Custom Capture System. This may cause the resolution to change in which case you’ll need to go through calibration/alignment again.
I was just about to post that yes, it seems to be something to do with the USB3 port. Other cameras have no problem with being plugged into a (powered) USB3 hub but this one might have an issue. Device manager is not reporting any errors with it though, the camera remains available and working according to it. However, I unplugged it from the 7-port hub and plugged it into one on the front of the PC and I’m using it OK for now. Have to test some more to see if it is now stable. I don’t have any USB2 ports test (I think, I’ll have to drag the PC out and see if there are any on the back panel!). Oh, and cable length is 2M or thereabouts, I haven’t measured it.
Have checked, advert says it’s supplied with a 3.2M (10 foot) cable so I’ll take their word for it…
Any hub in the middle can certainly cause complications. This may be an issue with overall bandwidth requirements as well. Suggest you try to see if you can get it working reliably connected directly to the computer.
Then reintroduce factors to see what causes the issue.
