I’m installing a chain to hold the wiring on my S9 and the cabling is going to be short…
I can buy from Sculpfun a new loom and cut that up but wood cost me 19 US Dollars, which wood to me be 40 NZ Dollars
I only need a small amount…
I’m sure it’s about 22g wire but how to phrase it on Google…I need to buy in NZ cose I don’t want to wait 4-4 weeks for it…
Cheers Merlin…
My 5W machine had 22AWG stranded for the major components and 24AWG stranded for the limit switches. I didn’t count or measure the strands, but it didn’t look exotic like the expensive stuff I use on my bikes. Cheap all-copper stranded from Amazon or similar should be sufficient. I think I needed to add about 4" (100mm) to each wire when I added my.drag chains. 400x400 machine and I used about 1.25 meter of 10x11 drag chain. It was JUST big enough for the wires with staggered splices and a 6mm OD silicone air assist tube. I separated all the siamesed wires to help flexibility.
AWG = American Wire Gauge. The metric system uses square millimeter wire cross section.
24AWG = 0.25mm²
22AWG = 0.34mm²
I recommend choosing a slightly bigger diameter because some people reported that the cable is limiting the laser power (though I don’t think on the S9, but at 10+W at least).
The connectors are JST XH 2.54, by the way
Silicone-insulated wire is much more flexible than the usual (cheap) PVC wire and will last much longer while flexing in a drag chain. My admittedly limited experience indicates the somewhat higher price for silicone insulation also buys much better quality copper conductors.
You can even get four-conductor silicone ribbon cable for stepper motors!
Buy more than you think you need, because you’ll start using it for everything!
Trying to get relevant search results from google anymore is an effort in futility.
DuckDuckGo is my preferred search engine these days. But that’s a different story.
I strongly agree with Ed here - silicone wire is the play here. It does come at a cost premium, but for anything in a drag chain running the usual PVC sheathed wire is asking for trouble. At the professional end of things they actually make cables rated for cable-chain service (industrial servo cables and the like).
Thanks to you all… Silicone is the way to go… Don’t need trouble down the road…
Just had a quick look on the Amazon site Ed posted and the prices are good compared to buying a ready made from Sculpfun…
Colin I put Google on because I though everyone used that site and DuckDuckGo might be unusual… But I’m with you DuckDuckGo is far better…
Merlin…
An after check, the ribbon cable is 24 AWG… So on reflection as now I have a 10 watt laser on the S9, 20 AWG wood be a better choice and do all the wiring… Bugger more money for my hobby…
Cheers Merlin…
You said that like it is a bad thing.
