Cannot connect k40+ to lightburn

I just got a k40+ omtech laser. I purchased the lightburn software from omtech and am unable to get the laser to connect to lightburn. I am trying to install the drivers, I got through the driver package, however when I go to click “install” nothing happens on my computer. I’m currently on a macbook air running the most recent version of sequoia and have the laser connected to my computer through a dongle in order to use the usb to usb cord that came with the laser. Any help is greatly appreciated as I am not an overly tech savvy person.

See if this helps. There is a limited length to a USB cable, usually 3 to 5 meters.

Check out @thelmuth video on how to ensure your have the correct drivers.

Sing out if you still have issues.

The computer is registering the machine as USB UART-LPT so it is registering the laser I believe? I am using the connection cord that the laser came with. Still no luck in lightburn

Some of these have a different driver, it depends on the USB chip on the board. I’ve seen a bunch of these that just upgraded the driver and they worked.

If you unplug it does it go away?

We’ll have to get someone over here that knows that board and what driver they are using in the Mac. I know Linux pretty well, but not the Macs OS anymore.

Maybe @thelmuth can be of some help.

Have you tried to create it manually?

:smiley_cat:

Yes if I unplug it it goes away, I’ve also tried creating it manually. It never shows up in lightburn under devices but all my bluetooth accessories seem to.

I’m not familiar with the K40+ other than what I’ve read on the forums, but to me the UART-LPT does not seem correct. If that’s a GRBL board, which I believe it is, it should be a serial connection. LPT is a parallel port if I remember correctly.
I think you’re not looking at the correct device or there is an issue with the cable or connection.
Have you tried connecting it to a different computer? Windows perhaps?

I unfortunately don’t have access to another computer. I have tried a different cord with no luck. UART-LPT is the information that comes up under USB information in the “about this mac” when I plug and unplug the K40. Yes it is a GRBL board. Would you recommend any programs for running windows on a mac? I’m wondering if that might be my best option at this point.

I run Parallels on my Mini. I have not tried controlling a laser using it though. It would be less expensive in the4 long run to buy a cheap PC Laptop. Parallels runs a little over $100 per year for licensing, plus your Windows license. You can find a PC for $200-$300.

Do you have a friend that would let you borrow a PC for a day to test? I would recommend this before spending on new hardware without knowing that it will solve your issue.
I don’t have any other ideas at the moment.

I’m in the process of downloading a free trial of parallels to see if thats going to solve the problem. I might just buy parallel with the one time purchase if it works so that I don’t have to buy another laptop. Thank you for your help, you’ve been more helpful than omtech! I called them and got someone on the phone who admitted they weren’t familiar with mac. Once they’d gotten past the usual “is it plugged in” he said he would ask other tech support and call me back and then just never called again. That was three days ago lol

Unfortunately, that is a story I hear often. Not just with Omtech, but with all the chinese manufacturers.

I hope it works for you. You will need to install the CH340 or 341 driver for windows to communicate with the laser.

The most accurate way to do this is to examine the USB driver chip on the target board. Then find a driver for it.

I have boards with 340, 341 and 2100 series usb chip requiring a different driver.

This should help you determine the correct driver.

Some of these don’t mark the usb chip, so it’s more difficult to determine which driver you need…

I’ve never looked (or seen) a K40+ upgrade board, but there are plenty of them around.

Were you able to get passed the “install” part? I am having the same issue.

UART is a serial port
