Cannot delete unwanted lines from a .png

Hello Everybody. I’m new to the Forum, so please be patient with me.

I’m looking to create a sign burned into wood. I have lettering that surrounds the top part of the image. There are two vertical lines on each side of the image that I cannot remove. See image:

I have used several third-party software packages in order to remove the border. Below is the image printed from MS Windows:

I reviewed the Forum posts and have tried to remove the lines using Trace, then tried to remove the lines. I cannot click on the lines to remove. I verified that the image was Un-Grouped.

I’m sure there is a simple way to overcome this, I just cannot figure it out. Here are my system specs:

Laser: XTool D1Pro
Lightburn Version: 1.4.05
Lightburn Firmware: D1S_app_V40.31.006.01B2_20230206
Laptop: HP Laptop 17, 64 Bit, x64 Processor
Operation System: Windows 10 Home

If you need further information, please let me know.

Thank you for your help.

Use the TRACE command to change from an image to SVG object.

Then use edit nodes to removed artifacts.

Use the MASK command to remove the white areas around the image and the red lines

Can you provide your current file for us to look at?

Here is the file I’m trying to use.

Thank you!

Hello James,

Thank you for your reply. I’m away from my system right now. I will try this tomorrow and let you know.

Thank you!

I understand being away from your system. What we need is the actual file.
Sometimes it is easier to find another source file that does not have issues to work with. Try right click on the image below, copy to clipboard and paste into lightburn.

This is the upload button to send files to the forum.

This is a similar JPG that I will show you how to TRACE

If you traced and then ungrouped, I suspect that you have the image and vector overlayed on each other.
Click and drag to see if you have one over the other.

I followed your instructions using the provided image and here is what I get:

I would delete the one on the left to avoid confusion then select and preview the one on the right.

I finally got it!

Thank you for all your help!

I tend to work in FILL mode for all of my layers due to the visual clarity it offers. The red lines on your IMAGE preview is because you have SHOW TRAVERSAL MOVES enabled and you have a slight overscan enabled. That shows where the laser head moves but does not burn. Were you to increase the overscan, those red lines would be a lot wider.

If it’s the red vertical lines (green arrows), that’s from having show traversal moves enabled in the preview. In this case, it’s your overscan.

@JimNM – missed you comment oops.

Curious. Why does it not look like this?

You don’t have FLOOD FILL or OFFSET FILL enabled. The laser head will travel from edge to edge and engrave line by line.

Try FLOOD and OFFSET and look at the previews. Push the PLAY button to see the process the laser head will follow to engrave.

I figured it out. He was set to grayscale mode. All other image modes give my result.

Offset laser head travel - lots of back and forth but faster than some other options

Flood Fill - slightly slower

Stock option - fasted for this image at 56 mins

The only way to know what will work best is to try different settings and preview them.

Those options are not available in image mode, which is what he was working in and what I had the graphic in.

I couldn’t understand why the traversal lines didn’t fill the image. It was because he was in grayscale. I would never use that mode for this type of image, which is why it didn’t register.

Hello Jack,

Thank you for your help. This is one of those DUGH moments. IO turned off “show transverse moves” and the lines are gone.

Thank you again,

Bill
