Cannot Node Edit after Weld

I discovered after scanning some letters that the “insides” of some letters (think the “bowls” in capital B) were separate from the “outside” of the letters. I know I can Group the two objects (inside and outside) but the grouping can easily (for me) be undone accidentally. It appears that the only way of permanently joining them is to Weld them. However, after welding, I cannot get node edit to work; no nodes are shown. Is there a) another way of permanently joining these objects or b) a way to use node edit with welded objects?

That’s because the act of welding groups them. You cannot node edit grouped shapes.

Once you convert text to a path it becomes likeany other shape. Individual elements must be grouped if you wish them to remain together.

Yes, it happens all the time. You just need to pay attention when moving items. You can retype the letters and leave them as a font. I don’t know of any other way.

Just to clarify, the letters were never a computer font. I scanned 19th-century type specimen books to obtain the images.

Cool. Still no way to get around grouping then.
