Can't apply library engrave/burn settings to a layer

My name is Jim. I use an LM2 Pro, S2, V10 5W laser. I have been at this hobby for 3 days now.

I have library entries and have the parameters setup, but I can’t seem to load or apply them to a project. Library - Aluminum - (no thickness) - Engrave

The “Assign to Layer” button is grayed out.

I’m sure it’s something obvious.

Regards,

Jim

2 things to check for:

  1. Make sure you are at the actual cut setting of the material library. 3 layers deep - Material → Thickness → Cut
  2. You need to have an object in your workspace and the cut layer selected in your Cuts/Layers window.

Once you have both of those the “Assign to layer” should be available.

If this doesn’t work, take a full screenshot with the Material Library and Cuts Window showing.

You have to have a compatible layer. e.g. if you select a bitmap, that can only be an Image layer, this uses raster settings. As soon as you bring in a bitmap in, say, blue, a settings entry for Image in blue will show up, If you create a line in blue, a settings entry will appear for Line in blue. But they’re separate things.

A Library entry for Line cutting cannot be applied to an Image layer and vice versa.

Hey Jim,

This might be helpful. Skip forward to 13:10 to get a feel for some of the tools.

How many layers does your drawing currently have?

One. I’m just trying to engrave.

Thank you! I’m not cutting, yet. I just want the pre-set for burning “anything” on wood, cardboard, aluminum, etc. Do I just have to mess with it and test to find that?

The layer you’re currently select is an Image type. You wont’ be able to assign a “line” library cut to an image layer.

Make a new material cut for Image in that case.

I downloaded this library and I’m not trying to cut. I’m trying to engrave which is what I thought I had. In the settings of that Engrave this is what it shows. Is this what you’re saying I have to change?

Edit: here is the end result of what I want to do. I want to have an image, line, whatever and be able to set the material and have the speed and power settings correct. Paper vs leather for example.

Easiest way to do this:

  1. In Cut window click the layer that you want to build a library entry for
  2. Update the settings for that layer exactly as you want it
  3. In Material Library: Create new from layer
  4. Add the Material name and thickness for how you want this to be organized.

Victory! THANK you. Ok, so the problem was between the keyboard and the chair. The library I downloaded gave me the impression that I could use the Wood Thick - (no thickness) - Engrave. NOW I see that the icon is the key. One is a line and the word Engrave really means nothing.

So what you told me to do was create a new one and the icon/settings are now correct and I can apply to an image. You sir are awesome!

To be fair, the material library isn’t the most user friendly part of LightBurn. I find it a bit clunky but I don’t use it too often and it suits my needs.

Glad you’re up and running and glad I was able to help.

Yeah, I’ll just have to make my own settings for images. Not a big deal, I only burn on a few things. Plus, it’s fun to experiment. There is a guy selling these settings on Etsy. Freely downloadable elsewhere so anyone reading this who wants them be aware.
