Can't get cut shapes to work

Why am I unable to get cut shapes tool to work on the horse on the right? I am able to do it on the horse on the left, but it will not work for the horse on the right. I have made sure it is a closed shape multiple times.

I imported the floral pattern and silhouette on the left from an older version of lightburn, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

The horse on the right is grouped (note the dot-dot-dash pattern when selected).
Ungroup it and have another go at it.
