Can't Get Dark images on ceramic tile

10 Watt Diode Laser with Lightburn.

I’m trying to engrave on white ceramic tile coated with Gloss White Krylon Fusion all-in-one paint+primer. It contains Titanium Dioxide.

I’ve run material tests on the same kind of tile and run test engravings at more than one setting.

The attached example was run at 86 inches with 90% power. Even at other settings, I can’ get it darker.

Is this as good as it gets?

I’ve got super black burns on standard white tiles with a 10W diode.

My guess is probably not a thick enough layer of paint. I usually do two full coats.

Here is a chart I’ve saved from somewhere as a reference for TiO2 paint content.

More power does not equal darker outcome. I use rustoleum 2x gloss white at about 1500mm/min at 65%

Thank you. I can use that.

Thank you. The Rustoleum Gloss White I saw at Lowe’s didn’t show that it had Titanium Dioxide…

Does that matter?

I use 5th one down on the list.

You can use any white paint or primer, just make sure it does list the titanium Dioxide. The higher it’s listed on the ingredients the better.

Same results i get on white tile. Best I have been able to achieve.

Duh. Why didn’t I think of that…a thicker layer of paint.

I tried that and got exactly what I wanted!

Thank you.

What laser engraver did you use with these settings?

In the OP there was mention about using a 10W laser, what would be my adjustment for a 5W laser. Im thinking I would halve the speed at the same power?

For my 10 watt laser, I used the 1,500mm at 65% power recommended by Dskall. I also found that I had to use two coats of High-gloss spray paint that contained Titanium Dioxide/

A 10 watt diode laser.

I got good results with the RustOleum Heirloom White. The Cold Galvanizing Compound also worked. However, I got tired of the fumes from the paint and using lacquer thinner (@ $25/gal) to clean up afterwards so I made a water based version. I bought TiO2 on Amazon from Essential Labs for the recipe. The recipe has 25 g. TiO2, 25 g Tempera paint (helps suspend the TiO2 and gives some color so it can be seen on the tile), and 70 - 75 g. water. I mix well with a coffee frother and spray with a Harbor Freight touch up spray gun. This gave excellent results and all clean up with water and no solvents. Also cheaper than the Rusto paints. All this using 10W XTool D1 laser. Good luck.

Do you mind posting a photo? I’d like to see the results.

I’ve used a similar mixture, without the tempera paint, seems to work OK… I’ve been trying to do this with my fiber machine.

Thanks for posting.

This is what the tiles look like before

…resembles regular gray primer.

These all turned out real nice with dark black etching and fill mode. The eagle was hard using grayscale. I tried all kinds of speed and % power trials with not a lot of success.

Failure is nothing more than a lack of successful attempts.

I really liked the way the HVLP cheapo sprayer from HF worked. Highly reccomend.

Thanks.. They look really nice. I’ll have to give it a shot and see what happens with the fiber machine.

I tried Tio2 and got no results at all, will maybe try again at some point. I just use gloss white paint and leave it on.
