Can't see exported dxf (from Lightburn) in Inkscape

I’m trying to work with dxf files (exported from Lightburn) in some obscure piece of Chinese software, but it’s misinterpreting layer info…

To investigate the problem, I tried to load the dxf into Inkscape, but nothing is to be seen. If I press control+a, it says 3 objects are selected, yet I can’t see any selection handles.

This may not sound like a problem with LB itself, but I think there is something wrong/incomplete in the structure of the exported dxf’s… Is this a known issue?

There have been some issues with export but nothing like what you’re describing.

Can you upload the .dxf and the parent .lbrn file for review?

I’ve been doing CAD work since 1988 (yes, the year is correct). Most know there are several versions of DXF that can be written. Some softwares even let you pick which one you want, i.e., v12, v14, etc.

Now having said that, LightBurn gives no definition of which type of DXF it exports to so it becomes a challenge of uploading/downloading via various throughputs to eventually get what you “think” you need.

I’ve had this issue a few times but I just beat and bang on the original file with other pieces of software to get what I need. Yeah, not ideal but I have gotten pretty good at figuring it out when I need to. I don’t have to do it often enough to take the time to write it down. Next time I will for sure.

I apologize for the simple example, but it demonstrates the problem (on my pc) :slightly_smiling_face:

square.dxf (770 Bytes)
square.lbrn2 (3.5 KB)

I’m afraid I’ll have to resort to that. I was hoping to avoid it, since it’s one extra step that I’ll have to repeat hundreds of times. And every time you put something through a new piece of software, there’s a chance of new problems creeping in…

That being said, a workaround is better than no solution at all. Do you have any software suggestions for the dxf re-export, off the top of your head?
I’ve tried:

  • Rhino (relatively slow to start up, also splits up some of the closed paths)
  • Inkscape (doesn’t work, and I don’t like inkscape to begin with!)

I’m not able to recreate the issue.

I can import into LightBurn without fuss:

Inkscape is also fine:

Yes, inside lightburn itself everything is fine.

My inkscape version is 0.92. I’m sorry that I didn’t mention that.
Updating Inkscape itself will not solve my issue, because the problem is with another piece of software I’m using (it’s called xiao, but don’t think it’s very helpful to look at xiao itself). I was just using Inkscape as a proxy, but I see that that’s not very useful either…

To restate my original problem: when I use the dxf exported by lightburn in the chinese software, all color/layer info is gone. This doesn’t happen when I use something like Rhino. (but I would vastly prefer to use Lightburn for this workflow)

I think I know what you need to do- it happened to me also.

Which ever corner on the work space is your origin, move a corner of the item to be exported to that corner, so that the object is completely on the workspace and up to that origin corner.

Then export.

Thanks for you suggestion, but that didn’t make a difference, nor could I practically use it (I have many parts in a file, and they are larger than the workspace).

Can you link to the xiao software that you’re using? I’d like to understand what the target is.

I don’t think it will export properly if they exceed the workspace! That was my problem too- I had to export in bunches to get it all to export. I also used all one color/layer when I exported for Inkscape.

So to clarify:

  1. Move what you want to export to touch the corner/origin of your laser [not to exceed workspace]
  2. Select what you want to export
  3. Select DXF when the “file save as” shows up
  4. Make a new, blank Inkscape file
  5. Import- navigate to your file.

Can you export as an SVG and use that? It exports the colors/layers?
