I purchased a Ortur Laser Master 3 LE used but it was a brand new machine in a never opened box. I mention this because it sat for a couple years since purchase, so it does not have the latest firmware revision (209) but instead has (208). This older firmware has a bug that adds .0001 inches on each line of an image. All my cuts are nice and accurate, but all my images slant to the right. I have confirmed the belts are all set correctly and mechanically the machine is fine. It is only with images do I have this problem. From this forum I learned about the image bug in the old firmware version. So I have been trying to update my firmware to the latest 209 version. I know I am doing it correctly and when I update it, it actually looks like its updating. I followed the Ortur video instructions and my machine and laptop does exactly what the Ortur video does. I can see the firmware updating real time (see pic). The machine powers down after just like the video and it looks like it updated perfectly. But when I reboot the laser and I go back into lightburn and check my firmware version, it is still 208 and I still have image skewing
Better ask in the Ortur forums / Ortur staff about such issues. But at least to me it looks like you have to rename the file first; it’s got a (5) in its name, that doesn’t look right.
The number in parenthesis is meaningless ( ), its just the 5th time I downloaded off the webb, doesn’t effect the program itself. I have been working with Ortur, but they are in China, so I get one response per day because they reply in the wee hours of the morning (their day time) and then I see it the next day. They are somewhat trying, but its extremely slow because of the time difference. Ill give you an example. I explain this whole thing to Lily from Ortur in an e mail. In that explanation I tell her that it looks successfully downloaded but when I check the version I now have in Lightburn, it is still 208 and not the newer 209. She replies, “When you check the version after the download, does it say 208?”.
Whole day waisted with me responding “yes”
The next day her response is “Try it 2 or 3 times, it sometimes needs to be done multiple times”
Whole day waisted with me responding “have already done this 20+ times”
To their credit, they are trying, its just extremely slow and I have a project I am working on. I have actually come up with a sort of work around, because the image is moving .0001" each line. It is predictable and I can measure it and I am skewing the image to the left to counter it. This does work but it obviously makes aligning images and cuts more complex. I am sure there is some corruption of the image itself through this process of purposely skewing images to counter the programs skewing, but I am getting by for now. But I obviously want it fixed and hoping someone has a solution
I know that it does not effect the program itself, but it does effect the firmware flash process. The firmwares on those tiny microcontrollers may not be able to use filenames with spaces, special characters like parentheses etc. After reboot, the firmware checks for an update file, and if the name can’t be read, the update won’t run.
I don’t say that it is the reason here, but such issues have been a reason in many cases in the past for many IoT devices that I used.
I’d try to simplify the firmware name as far as possible, or at least to match it to the manual exactly.
Ok, fair enough. I appreciate the advice. I’ll try deleting that number and reloading it tonight and see what happens.
Tried it without the number, same results. It really looks like it successfully downloads and everything appears exactly as it does in Orturs video. Machine beeps at the and and shuts off exactly as the video does. But for some reason will not accept new version
Or, either the version string is not correct or the filename is wrong and it’s just the older version of the firmware. Are there any other sources where it can be downloaded? It would not be the first time a manufacturer provides incorrect files for download ![]()
I have fixed it!!
The video ORTUR offers doesn’t have the complete instructions
I found (somewhere on their website) the written instructions for the LM3 LE firmware update
Everything the video shows is 100% accurate but when you are completed downloaded to their machine you must go back into lightburn and type in a command in the “console”
The command is
$RST=*
Then after the command is entered the firmware update takes hold
I retested the images and skewing is gone!
Thanks for trying
You have no idea how happy I am right now to no longer deal with this!!!
My work around was failing because my current project has multiple images and even though I made a separate layer for each image (in hopes the offset would reset each time) it did not reset and accumulated worse and worse for each image, making my work around almost impossible!
Now I am freeeeeeeeeee!
Wohoo success! Congratulations on finding the fix and thank you for sharing the solution.
$RST=* is the GRBL command to “Clear and Load all data from EEPROM.”
I see two videos about upgrading the firmware on an Ortur LM3 but both don’t mention this. Do you remember, which one you followed?
@Aries-ORTUR maybe, you would like to forward it, that the instructions in this video don’t work, and that the written docs here are more accurate:
