Checkering pattern

Hello,
I’m working with a checkering pattern and I have it working for the most part. The layer with the checkers is a reverse offset so as to leave the checkers as unburnt wood. What I’m trying to do is to create a “border zone” outside the checkering that doesn’t contain any checkering. Mainly to keep an even edge of checkers.

I’ve been trying to use a fill layer (red) but of course that wants to fill the entire area (including checkers). I’ve tried inserting a line layer to hopefully stop the fill layer from trying to fill it all, however it still wants to burn the entire area. For the screenshot, i’ve removed the line layer and left just the red fill layer. The line layer was the same size as the inner black offset fill.

If there’s a better way to accomplish this, let me know. I’ve searched but this was the only method I found that gets the desired result.

Make sure your diamonds are grouped. Click on the black triangle and duplicate it. Without the duplicate traingle selected, shift click your diamond group. With both selected go to Tools>Boolean Assistant and choose the option that works. It should be Subtract A-B. Then you can select the inner triangle and change it to red layer and set to fill.
