CO2 laser jaggs edges

Hello!
I would like to ask about a problem I have with a laser. My laser is a Ruida RD6445 controller laser with a laser tube power of 80W and a working field of 1000x600.
So far it has been working flawlessly. However, as of recently, when engraving lines, the head shakes uncontrollably, resulting in non-cutting plywood or a serrated edge.
I’ve tried adjusting the mirrors, but I can’t see any difference. What else could be the cause?

Unless I misunderstand the description of the problem, I can’t imagine how adjusting mirrors would impact an uncontrollably shaking head. This sounds like the motion sytem needs inspected and something overhauled or adjusted. Bearings, belts, fasteners, etc.

The head moves normally. What I am talking about is minimal vibration. Perhaps the laser beam is unstable. Please look at the pictures.

Check your lens and make sure it’s well secured to the lens tube. It’s possibly loose and wobbling.

I agree with @berainlb that it’s a mechanical issue.

Dose it occur in the same area of the machine or is it random?

Dose it occur only on a single direction scan?

Tubes can cause issues, but this doesn’t look like that’s applicable from the photos.

Might try, with no power, to move the head by hand and see if you can find a sticky or bumpy area.

Good luck

@berainlb I have checked the lens in the head only. During the weekend I’ll check the lens in the laser tube.
@jkwilborn there is an area where it doesn’t occur (right side). Left side is risky. On the first photo I pictured flawed cutout - during the cutting head was moving in different directions, so there is no rule.

I’d move it gently by hand to see if you can feel any mechanical aberrations. Specifically on the left side…

Anything that is loose can cause these kind of symptoms. Might want to check the whole head assembly to ensure it all snugged up.

About the only thing on one side or the other is mechanical transport. Is there anything specific to the x or y axes?

:smile_cat:

There were no modifications done to the axes.
I remember cleaning the lens. My first idea was that the issue is caused by the dirt on the lens. I have disassembled the head, cleaned the lens and assembled again - it made a little difference (for the better) but… I am not sure.
I’ll check the head on Saturday.
