CO2 laser – should I turn off my water chiller (CW5000) over night?

As I’m not sure how long I have to wait after turning the chiller on, I have left it on for several days now. Is that a problem?

Also: Is there such a thing as “too cold”? I had temperatures of 14-15 °C in my workshop…
Would this affect the (60W) tube? Thanks!

I have CW5000 also, it is powered through the laser machine (there are plug sockets in the back of the laser body. so it only comes on when the laser is turned on. I don’t know of any other reason you would need to leave it on, especially over night.

My Tubes normal running temp is 9 degrees to 35 degrees, I used to run my water at 11, but have upped it to 15 (as my workshop is cold in winter also, sometimes I have to run the laser to actually warm up the water lol). You don’t want it to get toooo cold and freeze of course. Check your tubes range of running temp.

The CW5000 isn’t really a chiller, it’s a water pump with a fan. It won’t change the water temperature much from the ambient air temperature. Which could be an issue if the room has no heat in the winter. I don’t believe that any compressor style chillers will add heat in a cold room.

When the temperature gets to the desired operating temperature. Where you live it might be ‘no time’, in the Phoenix Arizona valley, it sometimes doesn’t get below 90 F, so you have to wait for it to cool down.

Russ Sadler advised me that the 5000 series coolers produce about 60 watts of heat, might keep it from freezing. I use propylene glycol at 50% for an ‘anti freeze’… buy it at the local feed store…

My tube seems quicker and run at a higher mA for the settings, if it’s cooler… Have nothing but experience to state that, but it doesn’t seem to make sense…

Good luck

Are you thinking about the CW3000?

I think it’s the 3000 series you are thinking of that is a fan and a radiator.

I have a 5202 and it is a refrigeration unit.

Yea sorry my mistake. Was thinking about the CW3000. With the 5000 series you should just set it at around 19C.
