Color mapping SVG into Lightburn

Hello. I bought an SVG file off Etsy. I am trying to import it into lightburn and it comes in black. Is there an easy way to color map while inporting??? Or should I color map in inkscape?

Not sure what you mean by color map. You can assign any of the layer colors you want by selecting the object and then clicking the color along the bottom. The engraving process is not a color process, it only burns in shades of brown (assuming wood) accordingto speed and power.

Pictures and screenshots of what you’re trying to achieve would be helpful.

You can find a color map here:

Vector shapes imported to LightBurn will respect the color layers or do a closest match fit. Keep in mind that LightBurn only supports 29 cut layers in a single project.

Having said that, if your current SVG is importing as black, even if the original image is in color, this makes me think the contents of the SVG is actually a raster image rather than a vector image. In that case no real mapping is possible. You could attempt to trace the image in Inkscape and then import but you’re likely needing to do a whole lot of editing to make that useful if the original is meant to hold cut layers.

Welcome @Ddalton, Thanks for reaching out.

When LightBurn loads the SVG (along with other file formats), evaluates the colors used in the original, then tries to match these colors to Layers in LightBurn. If willing, share a screenshot image of how the file should look, we may have further suggestions. You may be able to select sections of the SVG and assign them to a different layer directly within LightBurn.

Import the SVG, then see if you can select individual shapes or “parts” of the artwork. With a selection, click one of the colors at the bottom of the main screen to assign that shape to the corresponding layer.

We also provide the HEX codes along with downloadable color palettes for Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and Adobe Illustrator and more if you’d like to use external app to set colors to be mapped.
