Copy along path bug with rotate copies off

Hi all,
I want to copy a line along a path and it works like I thought it should when I have “rotate Copies” on. As soon as I switch it off, there is a little offset of the line and the path
Rotate on

All lines on the path

Rotate off

Here you can see the offset, which is a liitle greater than the offset of the prior line

Any ideas?

This might be a bit tricky to get exactly what you’re expecting.

If you place the center of the copied shape along the spine of the path you want to copy along then you’ll have the shape follow the curve in the way you expect.

However, the vertical distance between shapes changes as the curve flattens. Not sure if that’s a problem for what you’re trying to do.

Thanks, that‘s a good hint! solved my problem…but it seems that’s still a bug.
why doesn‘t it work with the left or right end the line? the starting point of the lines is correct when rotate is on…

I think this is about understanding how copy along path actually works. It will copy any shape along any path in such a way that the geometric center of the copy shape is equidistant to the path. If you look at your original example from that perspective, you’ll see that the center of the copy shape is in fact equidistant to the path.

The blue lines in this screenshot are all the same length:

This is why it appears to work as you expect with the rotate feature enabled.

OK, I see!
but wouldn’t it be better to use the common points of contact or the two closest points to calculate the path instead of the center point?

Possibly? Not sure. I suspect that while that approach may be more intuitive in this particular case that the opposite would be true across a wider variety of usages and examples.

If you can experiment with this and make an argument for a different approach then I’d suggest documenting and making a request on the feature request page.
