Cut lite weigth carbon

Is it possibly to cut lite weight carbon fibor or kevlor that has been laminated to thin plywood sheets ? I shoud also add can it be cut with a 5.5 w air assisted lasor. Or would i have to upgrade.

Hi David,
Cutting composite materials with a laser is kinda hit & miss.
the different materials tend to have varying melting temperatures and flash points. You might be able to cut it but odds are it won’t be pretty.
I would suspect you would get better results with a rotary cutter.
Cheers,
Rob H.

  1. Try burning carbon with anything. Definitely a miss.
  2. The binding material in carbon fiber material (resin) could produce toxic gasses. Another miss.

Carbon Fiber sheets are cut with a laser. They use a hybrid beam (co2 & fiber) laser.
Kevlar will cut on a co2 laser.

It’s safe to assume that anything you cut in a laser will produce toxic fumes.

Yeah, but I don’t think David has one of those. I melted Stellite with a laser, but it was a 15KW unit

Absolutely true. But some will eat up your machine and kill your dog rapidly.
