I need help with the settings to be able to cut 1/8 wood for like monograms you hang in your car. All it’s doing is burning the smaller letters instead of cutting it out. If I could upload a picture to show anybody I really need some help.

I was doing 170 speed 70 power and it burns sometimes. Also how far dose the laser have to be from the wood?
In the third pic - I can’t tell if the variable darkness is adjacent or overlapping lines.
