Cutting help - please

I am new here and new to laser crafts. I have a Falcon 10w. I have tried to cut 3mm Basswood. I have cleaned the laser, adjusted focal point and even increased the number of passes.

Hi Theresa

Are you getting any mark on the material.
Can you say what your power & speed settings are.
Can you post your settings here for people to see.

I am getting marks. Mostly burning. I have went as low as 5.6 mm/sec at 70%-100% Then up to 100mm/sec at same power 70-100%
I have even tried the Lightburn material test card and still did not cut all the way through.

Change your speed to mm/min, mm/sec is ctoo fast for a 10watt diode

Thank you! I will try that this evening. I will post here with my results.

Changing the units is not going to help apart from getting numbers you may be used to. I agree 100mm/s is too fast for your laser.
you have air assist that would help

Without the help in this forum I would have failed - also a newbie.

One thing at a time:

  • check the machine settings (laser tools → machine settings) and post a screenshot here
  • do a material test (laser tools → material test) … yes! really do it, otherwise I’ll show you photos of the material I wasted :smirk:
  • try to stay under 80 % power and do more phases instead;
  • place your workpiece on a honeycomb or at least so that air can circulate under the workpiece

These were the best and most effective advice I received here, but the really experienced people here can surely help you

I am so excited that changing mm/sec to mm/min has given me such a better result. I still have adjustments to make but am pleased!!! Thank you for the advice and support! Working on a pencil jig right now :slight_smile:
