Cutting out an imported shape

I made a cut board to find the best speed, power, and passes for my project. I imported a line image to cut out but the option in the tools drop down wont let me select cut out shape. Have I forgotten a step? Ray5 10W

Welcome to the forum…

Do you mind posting the .lbrn2 file?

What are you doing exactly that this is required? If we know what you’re doing, it’s usually a bit more easy to come up with an answer.

What or how is it that it won’t let you cut?

Is it an image?

There’s a difference between an “image” of a line and a vector “line” (or “curve”). If you are importing a JPG / PNG image, then it’s a picture of lines, not the lines themselves.

You can trace the image to convert the lines into vector lines and curves, but you’ll then run into the problem that LightBurn converts each edge of the line in the picture (where the black line meets the white background) into a separate line or curve, which is generally not what you want.

If you can get the original design as an SVG file, it will probably have the lines & curves as vectors; it’s possible to embed an image in an SVG file, but they generally come from programs that work with vectors rather than images.

If all else fails, you can trace the image in a program like Inkscape using what’s called “center trace” to lay a single single vector or curve along the middle of each line.

I want to cut out the shape of the state of Texas. I imported a line drawing onto the work space, selected it and using my cut speed and number of passes applied to the cuts/layer thing. went to tools but the cut image was not usuable.

Additionally I did trace the image using the tools drop down menu.

Upload the file if possible

How do I upload the file? Your working with an old timer here-sorry.

Thank you all for responding-after tracing the image and removing the import, all i had to do was press “start” on the laser. Worked perfectly Made a really nice cut out. Thanks again from this novice.
