I have an S1 and am currently using Lightburn 7.03. In previous forums, there was lengthy discussions about this issue and last May, it was posted that the new Lightburn version 7.0 would fix it. I cam using the current version, and my S1 is still cutting triangles when I put a square around a design to be cut. It finishes cutting the design and then starts the diagonal instead of the square. I have ruined multiple projects because of this bug, and agree with many other posters that XCS isn’t suitable for what I need.
It’s not sufficient to only upgrade LightBurn. You need to make sure the device type is configured to xTool. If you created your device before this new device type was released, you may still be on GRBL device type.
You can check this by pushing the “Devices” button in Laser window. Then select your laser and review the current device type. If not “xTool”, push Edit button, then select xTool and finish out the wizard.
Thank you for your response. I followed your directions by ensuring the device was edited to xTool. I began a materials cut test and it continued to cut triangles instead of squares. I repeated everything again, with the same results. Other thoughts?
Can you try creating a new device with xTool device type and try again? Make sure that correct device is selected in Laser window and then test again.
Also, please confirm you are on version 1.7.03.
I have repeated all of the steps you suggested and did another materials test. The preview window shows squares to be cut, but it cuts triangles. I am using the current version 1.7.03.
That’s strange.
Can you provide the following:
- In Material Test, push the Save Gcode button, save to a file with .txt extension and upload that file here
- Confirm firmware version of your laser
Sorry, but I realized that the XTool version may not have been selected. I think it was still grbl XTool. When I selected the correct one now, the macro buttons on the console were reset to macro 0-5 and now I don’t have any rotary functions or the detect button. I’m not sure how to even focus it to run a material test. I appreciate your patience, since I am still relatively new to this.
Well, at least that’s good from the perspective that it explains why you weren’t getting the corrected behavior.
Switching to the xTool device type entails some changes in how you interact with LightBurn.
Take a look at this link that describes many of the changes including how to focus and use of rotary:
Note that there are other setup steps that you may still need to take. Make particular note of the additional g-code that you may need to setup for the device.
Thank you for your continued help. I downloaded the beta version, but then couldn’t open it because it was a dmg file. So I downloaded the V1.7.00 as well and installed it. Since it doesn’t say Beta version next to the version number, I’m not sure it’s the right one.
Right now I can’t even test because my laser won’t lower the focus probe at all. That may be a whole other issue.
Actually you needn’t download the Beta. 1.7.03 is newer and should include any of the necessary code for xCode devices.
However, the instructions for setup and how to operate are relevant from that post.
Did you push the “Focus Z” button as indicated in that post?
There is also instructions for setting up a Macro to home the Z-axis.
Are you saying these don’t work?
I figured out the probe issue. Now I need to go back and reinstall the 1.7.03. I was able to do a test cut, and it actually cut a square! Finally! Now hopefully it will do the same in a materials cut.
THANK YOU so much for your help and your patience. Everything is working as it should now.
