Is the Neje 4 max capable of cutting the type of vinyl graphics you would apply to a vehicle? I’m specifically asking about the blade cutting application. Thanks in advance !
A diode laser may be “capable” in the sense of cutting some colors of vinyl with a certain thickness, but you should not do it, because the usual vinyl sheets consist of PVC: polyvinyl chloride.
When a laser vaporizes PVC, it releases chlorine gas (among other nasties) which combines with moisture in the air to form hydrochloric acid, which will proceed to corrode everything in the room, including the inside of your lungs.
The dose make the poison, so you can certainly get away with an occasional few inches of PVC vinyl cutting, but it’s a Bad Idea™ in general.
You can get laser-safe “vinyl” made from polyurethane, in both pressure-sensitive and heat-transfer formats.
Thanks for the response. I’m aware of the poison issue. My question specifically asked if using the blade option would work.
Very apt paraphrase
Given that this is a forum largely devoted to laser cuttery, that blew right by me.
Knowing you have a drag knife cutter, then cutting vinyl sheet is basically what it’s intended for and there’s no reason not to.
Just like working with a laser, trial and error will teach you a lot. Buy a small sample of the vinyl and test it.
Because LightBurn assumes it’s working with a laser, it does not produce the intricate maneuvers required to properly orient a drag knife to cut sharp corners. As a result, the outlines will have rounded corners and the endpoints probably won’t join properly.
It’s worth experimenting, but don’t be surprised if the results are worse than a specialized vinyl-cutting program.
Thanks Ed and Mike for the responses. Much appreciate members like you willing to share your time and expertise to help others like me. I think internally I had similar thoughts but was hoping someone had a more robust solution. I agree 100% with your answers. I’m going down the path of doing something the machine is just not meant to do. I may do some trial but the blade orientation while cutting seems like it would be the biggest issue. It’s the thickness question of cutting the vinyl but not cutting the backing is what was troubling me. Never thought about blade orientation and the affects as it followed the cut path
In the drag knives I’ve used, that’s a mechanical adjustment in the blade holder, rather than a software setting:
You set the blade to stick out of the holder by the thickness of the vinyl, the machine presses it against the sheet with a spring controlling the force, and away it goes.
