Dimension of object pasted from Affinity Designer are wrong

I create a rectangle in Affinity Designer of 10 x 10 mm size:

If I copy it and paste it into LightBurn it ends up being 32.54 x 32.8 mm in size.

For comparison, if I paste it into MoI 3D it arrives in the correct size:

Here is what NirSoft InsideClipboard shows, I’m assuming LightBurn consumes the PDF:

If I save that clipboard object, I get a PDF that appears to have the correct size, Chrome shows it as 0.4 x 0.4 inch which is pretty much 10 mm:

Uh, wait a second. It’s actually much worse. The shape doesn’t get imported at all. It’s just the thumbnail that gets imported as an image.

So I have to find a better way than copy&paste anyway.

Copy paste works from Inkscape → LightBurn. Sounds like this doesn’t work for Affinity Designer in terms of getting vector data.

SVG export is likely your best bet followed by AI or PDF format.

I exported an actual PDF file and dragged it onto LightBurn, that worked.

When you export an svg set raster dpi to 72. Mine always come out the correct size doing it that way.

Note that most applications have moved to a 96 DPI standard. If required, this is a configurable setting in LightBurn.

He did ask about Affinity Designer, I didn’t specify, but that is what I use. I can’t speak for anything else.

I wasn’t focused so much on the application. I was calling it out because if his import setting is set to 96 DPI while the graphic setting is 72 DPI then it wouldn’t import to scale.

Affinity lets you specify the DPI on export. It defaults to 300 DPI - that’s why the OP file was importing incorrectly.

If you specify 72 DPI on export, and have LB set to import at 72 DPI, it imports correctly.

My file (I chose PDF as format) was never imported incorrectly.

It’s the copy&paste that doesn’t work correctly.

Unfortunately exporting a file and importing it into LightBurn is a bit cumbersome compared to copy&paste.

I’ve just had a little play and found that if you change a setting in Affinity Designer it will copy and paste into LB as vectors and in my brief tests it comes through at the correct size.

EDIT: You also need to make sure that you’ve set the DPI of your Affinity document to the same DPI as set in LB:

With that setting enabled copy&paste works, thanks @Marcus_Wakefield.

The size is only correct though if the document DPI in Affinity Designer (under Document Setup) is set to 96 (or 72 if it has been changed in LightBurn).

That thought occurred to me when I woke up this morning. I had already changed it to 96DPI in AD in a previous test. The size was almost correct (it still had a small error but I think that was down to antialiasing). Anyway, it was no good as it was still a raster so I had a look in the settings and found the one I highlighted in my post. I’m pleased it solved your issue.

If you could mark my post as the solution it helps other users with the same issue…

Done. Maybe add a note to the post that you need to have Document Setup set up correctly because it’s quite surprising.

Ok, I’ve done as you suggested.
