Drawing horizontal and vertical lines

I think I should hold the shift key whilst drawing a line to keep it vertical or horizontal but it seems very hit and miss whether it works or not. How should it be done please?

Thanks very much Rick. I was clicking to start the line then holding the mouse button down while I held the shift key like in coreldraw. The guide taught me to click in the start position then release the mouse button and hold shift while drawing the line so all sorted. Thanks!
