Editing lines to change into different layer

Hi I was wonder how I can change the black lines from the arrows to red and not be black. I want to trace the line and not cut it out. I want to cut around the rectangle and continue up and around not to flood the curvy shape.the top is a shape and I added a rectangle and then cut the straight line. But I cannot change the left over.

select the lines so we can see if they are grouped, or see what ones are connected where… You can use offset (alt+o) to create another line around the whole project. Select all the black lines and offset outward.

The top shape is grouped together. The three lines of the rectangle are grouped but not with the top shape. This is ok but I was wanting a different outcome. Not delete the line but trace it

Use the node editor. Make sure your black shapes are ungrouped, this is critical as node editor doesn’t work with grouped shapes. Select the line you want to change, click node editor, hover over one end of the shape you want to separate and if there isn’t already a node at that location click i to insert a node, then while still hovering over that node click b to break the shape. Repeat the insert break at the other end of your line. You now have that section separated from the rest and can place it on it’s own layer to do with as you please.

Just select what you want and then click on a different cut layer color to assign it to a different layer. Then you can do what you want with that layer

Something like this:

  1. Do an Offset of the red shapes until it touches (it must touches) the black rectangle.
  2. TRICK: Draw a little square and group with the black layer to protect it from the following operation.
  3. Use Scissors Tool to remove the unwanted parts of the red offset shape.
  4. Group the red shape with the red offset left over.
  5. Ungroup the black shape and delete the square made at point 2.
    .
    Save your final design.
