Looking for some assistance. Been engraving for a while now, but I am kinda stumped right now.
My wife wants something engraved on one of her many… tumblers, but she wants me to paint it purple . Just the engraving, not the whole tumbler. Any else ever tried something like this and was successful? I normally use Oramask with my CNC router. Tried it on the laser, and it did not turn out good. I am currently using a Ortur LM2 pro with rotary.
Coat the object with something you can burn away, then paint that and wash off the mask.
Cover the item in something like masking tape, burn it off paint and remove the tape…
The problems with these are pretty numerous. It’s relatively easy to make a circle cut it out and peel the circle out, then paint it… However when you get very detailed getting hundreds of little pieces out can be a problem…
The cover with some kind of paint that can be washed off with water or another solvent that won’t damage the paint you wish to keep…
I have a dpssl (diode), co2 and a fiber and have not seem a really good way to do this…
Hopefully someone will come along and show me wrong with a good solution… that would be great.
I also found oromask can melt slightly around the edges. Try a lower setting that just barely removes the oromask… I have also tried using cut lines rather than engrave and peeling out text… this is fine for lower detail stuff. My goto is actually painters tape. Another comment suggested that, and then paint n peel. I second that approach. It works well for me.
Looked at oromask but the recommended uses do not include incinerating it… That means there is no data on what you are producing with the vaporization. They contents are not provided, so I have no clue what it’s made out of.
I looked at at the safety documentation , it skipped anything about burning this because it’s not a specified use.
I only mention this because many people just stick it under there and lase it… be careful what you lase.
I have used the oramask for burns quite a lot with excellent results for larger signs. I use painters tape for small and detailed stuff. I also cut lots of leather, rubber and acrylic… they also do not state that burning those are recommended. lol. 100 watt c02 laser doesn’t care much and just “incinerates” everything. I think using a decent speed is key for clean burns with masking. 300mm/sec ish for me.
Actually the co2 laser, supposedly, was designed with acrylic in mind… many leather producers know about lasing it and some process it specifically for lasers. Some types of leather you should not engrave/cut because of certain chemicals that may be used in the tanning process. Specific types of rubber are created for lasing, so I do, conservatively disagree…
I’ve never done much leather works, involving combustion, as I can’t handle burning flesh, so I can only go on what I’ve read from the vendors of leather…
Only a limited everything… doesn’t work well on stainless or other metals… need a few more watts.
They only thing they tell you about oromask is the melting temperature, not even what’s in it… nor if you can use it in any other way… You would think, they would advertise any use possible to get the revenue from the sales…
In the safety documentation, it mentions inhaling it… stating it’s not applicable… So if you lase it and breath the resulting vapors there isn’t any kind of safety issue… I highly doubt it. IMHO.
