Engraving on granite versus wood. Speed and power settings

I have a 70 watt Boss L 1630 Laser, and have been studying for weeks, learning LightBurn and photo grav. should the speed for black granite be set higher for photos than on wood? and why? I did some demos of a wrinkled dudes face set at 500mm speed, and max power 32, min 15… 300 (dpi) .085 line interval, 75. cells per inch. using halftone. the result was good but once I ran it through photo grav it was even better. on wood I used the same image with a speed of 350 and left the other settings the same just to see what would happen… it looked awesome. I am a portrait artist and draw/paint people for commissions over the years and this is all new to me. I am very exited to learn as much as I can and experiment. The whole process is a form of art to me. So I’m very curious to understanding why. If anyone can offer any suggestions or chips, I’d be highly appreciate it. We have access to basically a lot of supplies so we’re very blessed in that area. Basically, I’m curious if the lasers speed should be traveling faster over black granite as opposed to wood for image of greeting

This video by Laser Everything is excellent on photo engraving… I recommend it all the time for people with dpi/lpi issues. It is done on a fiber, but the procedure works for any laser with any material.

Keep in mind what exactly the laser is doing to the material… This clues you into what can be expected…

I’ve done a lot of slate and the dpi is less, like glass, because the material gets hot and explodes… in simple terms… so you are blasting at a small scale. This limits the dpi you can expect or attain.

I don’t think speed has a lot to do with it… it’s how the laser damages the material…

Check out the video, maybe it will help you with the proper dpi, which can eliminate most problems. You will use this information as long as you lase, so it’s a good investment for your time.

I had some large 1x2’, hard slate flooring…

Tried to do a Mayan calendar on it with the fiber…

About 10 minutes or so later, while eating dinner, there was a loud pop… it was the slate shattering…

Good luck
