Engraving on tile issues with intensity and overall end product

This is Angus, he is our rescue puppy and the subject of my first attempt to burn on tile. I watched hours of video thinking I was doing everything right for line interval/dpi/speed/power. I did multiple test grids. I admit I didn’t use the best speed/power because it would have taken 15 hrs to produce the image, but the other option wasn’t far off. This was 2 hrs burn time. I went against my better judgement and used Stucki instead of Jarvis but again, I wouldn’t expect much difference.

I settled on .085 line interval (299 DPI). I’m not at my laser at the moment but I believe my speed was
40mm/sec and my power was 12.5%.

If you look at the (terrible) finished product, there seems to be a band across the upper half where the intensity changed. Can anyone advise what would have caused this? Kind of concerning to me. Seems to be just where the dog’s face is.

Also, any hints on what I could be doing wrong?

Thanks

Actually, I’m determined to solve the terrible image quality myself. Going to watch a video someone suggested (in its entirety).

Just if anyone has any idea about what could be happening with the change in intensity band across the upper half?

Based on nothing more what’s gone wrong with similar, albeit non-tile, projects:

  • Manufacturing flaw in the tile surface finish?
  • Inadequate cleaning / scrubbing before TiO₂ coating?
  • Contamination left from the cleaning?
  • Different TiO₂ coating thickness, as from an errant brush stroke?

Sometimes all my mistakes cancel out, but …

OK thanks Ed, I hope you are right. Rather it be that than something with my new laser…lol
