Engraving through gesso

I recently bought some 1/8” plywood that has very coarse grain. I usually paint and engrave through the paint. Because the grain is so coarse the paint is bleeding from one section to the other. I was considering using Gesso to seal the grain before painting. Has anyone engraved through gesso? What alterations do you make in your settings? Thanks for any input. And ps telling me to buy new plywood will not be helpful. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I have used sanding sealer with good results.
