Engraving Wood, stainless steel and other materials

I’m so new to engraving I may not be asking the right question but getting ready to give up on Lightburn. Not able to view the Material library to pick Wood, Acrylic, stainless steel, etc. How am supposed to create my own wood settings if I don’t even know what to do. Is there a basic setting for beginners I can download?

The materials library does not have values. Since every laser will vary based on frequency/power and probably other things.

You will develop your own method of using your laser, generally by trial and error.

As a general rule, co2 lasers work with natural products and fiber with man made products although there is some cross over. An led laser is generally not the best use for metals as are co2.

There is enough users of your machine around here, it has it’s own area

Good luck

LightBurn does not currently provide pre-filled Materials Libraries. Some of our users have produced their own and share around the web. We recommend testing your laser on the materials you plan to use so you get the desired results you are after.

Using a library shared by others should be used as a starting point only, and confirmation by your own testing is the best way to start understanding how your laser preforms and what settings are going to work for your goals.

If you share a bit more about what you want to produce, we may have some starting suggestions to work from. The key to getting the results you’d like will require testing the material to see how your setup and settings work. Testing, testing and more testing. Once you have the settings as you like, you can then add to your own library for easy recall later.

There is a first project section in the xTool D1 video that LightBurn produced. Perhaps this will help get you started.

Xtool has a Material settings page on there site that I have been using as a starting point for my projects. They have all been in the ball park so far. Hope this helps!
