It would be useful to be able to set an arbitrary origin / datum point when drawing, against which all workspace objects could be referenced. This temporary origin should snap to all the usual snap points as defined in the settings and the grid should shift to reflect the new quantization… Such a feature could ease initial layout region by region and avoid some of the mental arithmetic needed at present when laying out regions far from the static design origin. It would also help when building symmetry as positive and negative complementary coordinates are easier to check. Perhaps instead of ‘drawing origin’ it could be called ‘grid override’ or ‘datum point’ so as to avoid confusion with the other Origins associated with the machine setup. It would also be great if the temp drafting grid / origin had easily switchable units (current selection saved with the project) so that, for example, pcb layouts using both 0.1" and metric spacings in the same design can be easily constructed.
Alternatively, and if the above approach is likely to cause confusion with the workflow, a separate drafting sheet with machine independent grid references could be implemented - like sketch mode in Fusion 360 - reverting back to the main workspace after each modification of the draft.
