Frame Partial Cut-Out

New user, and new to this type of 2D modeling, so I’m not even sure how to ask some questions! So, thanks in advance for reading!

I want to make a multi-layer picture frame where some text and images overhang into the photo frame area. What I ahve so far is the representative frame and center-part to cut out, with some text on the top and bottom. The text will be filled so it’s darkened and visible regardless if it is cut-out or on the top of the frame.

I was able to use the cut shapes tool thinking that would let me split the words in half and then do different things to each “side” of the split. However, if I were to cut out the outline of each then it would just cut off those bits when it cut the frame.

Can you suggest how I can make this work? I feel like I’m very close and just missing one key step.

Screen shot of what I have so far:

I think I just figured it out.

  1. changed the text to a path.
  2. duplicate the text (ctrl-d)
  3. select the inner rectangle, then hold ctrl button select the text (now broken into separate numbers)
  4. Cut Shapes (alt-shift-c)
  5. Unselect all, then select the lines that are separated from that inner rectangle and delete them

Is this the “correct” way to do this?

example screen shot:

Can you elaborate on what the final product should look like? I suspect what you have now will not get you what you expect.

The only thing I can imagine is that you want the following:

  1. 2023 will be engraved into the frame
  2. You want the top portion of 2023 to part of the frame and cut out from it.
  3. However, you do not want the bottom of the 2023 to be cut into the frame at all. That portion will only be engraved.

Exactly! I think.

In that case:

  1. You need to separate out the engraving operation from the frame shape
  2. To get the frame shape as you want:
    2a. Duplicate the 2023
2b. Group the inner and outer rectangles of the frame
    2c. Group 2023
    2d. Select frame
    2e. Add 2023 to selection
    2f. Tools->Boolean Union
  3. With the remaining 2023 put that on a different layer set to Fill. Set fill settings for an engraving appropriately

End result should look something like this. I’ve pulled the 2023 fill away so that you can see the frame.

Brilliant, thank you! So much better than what I was forcing to work!
