Depending on the machine, it may be a lack of lubrication or there is dust and dirt or mechanical wear of moving parts…
Unplug the machine and examine the mechanical system.
I had a similar problem with my first diode laser. For me it turned out to be the coupler that connected the Y axis stepper motor to the cross shaft. After I tightened it, the problem went away. That might be something you’d want to check, if your machine has the same type of coupling.
