Granular control of Air Assist

Hi,
I use Air Assist but would be nice to control from Lightburn the power of the air assist so i can change between engraving and cutting. I see some diode lasers have automatic air assist but i don’t know how it works, how does the laser know when you are engraving or cutting and would that only work with their software or also with Lightburn ?

With grbl-lasers, there is no chance of granular control (via software). LightBurn can control a single on/off function (M7 or M8 gcode command) to turn on the air assist and M9 to turn it off. This is done per layer. So you can decide which layer should be cut with and without AA. But there is no command to tune the power of it.
You can add automatic air assist to most of the mainboards out there (though not documented officially at most manufacturers). Some examples are here:

Newer laser firmwares have a two-level switch using low (like 10%) power at engraving and full power at cutting. But then the pump is never turned off, just switched between 10% and 100%.
