Grayscale .JPG printing

I am a total noob to laser engraving. Whenever I try to print a photo the y axis does not move at all. When I convert the pic to .dxf, no problem but not getting the results… I have watched numerous videos but they are to teckie for this ;72 year old. Does anyone have a written solution like a checklist or plain written instructions written for the layperson, not a tech? Any help will be appreciated. I have a creality Ender 3 with a 5 watt laser.

What do you mean by “the y axis does not move at all”?
All the photo is burned on a single like, the laser moves only horizontally, not vertically? (if seen from above, no Z axis implied here).
It might be a problem with the settings, did you select the right laser model?

I don’t understand either “When I convert the pic to .dxf, no problem but not getting the results”. Looks like the “no problem” is problematic, what result do you have?

When I try greyscale the with a jpg the x axis moves fine but the y axis doesn’t move so I am continuesly printing the same line over and over. However, if I convert the picture to a dxf file it prints just fine but no fill, like it was trying to cut. Selected GRBL as shown in instructions.
