Good evening, I’ve been trying to use Chatgpt to help dial my laser in to no success.
I’m trying to line cut a 5.875in length x 1.5in width book mark, so its a smaller project. My laser seems to have issues with skipping with small projects with both fill and cut settings. When it skips it makes a mechanical skip sound and will usually skip when doing A, W, B, Y letters, and will skip at random times through the project.
My laser: Atomstack A40 Pro 20/40W
See the attached screen shots of all my settings.
I would be extremely grateful for any and all help, thank you all!
-Does that machine auto-home? It looks like you have homing disabled? $22=0
-The device origin is back left? That is odd, normally is front left for Atomstack.
-The speed and acceleration settings in GRBL (110-122) are very slow/conservative, (which is probably fine for now give the problem you currently have).
Check each axis will move smoothly without resistance when moving them by hand with the power off.
Try running a test file like this ‘Backlash’ one so we can get an idea of how the problem affects the output: (not saying you have a backlash problem I just want to see how your skipping problem affects the output in each axis)
Something else to try (given your strange GRBL settings) is to go to the Console Window and enter $RST=* to restore factory GRBL settings, and see if they are different/help?
Hi Nicholas, thanks for the response sorry I’ve been at work all day until now.
I decided to reset to factory settings to see if that would help, and it did not fix my skipping/grinding sounding issues.
I just tried to run this backlash project and I get about 6 seconds in and it starts skipping real bad while going back and fourth across X axis.
When I move my laser by hand when the powers off, it goes smooth on the Y access (front to back), but moving the laser side to side on the X axis is tighter, I have to lift up slightly on the laser and it moves smoother then. I’m not sure how to adjust this, I’m thinking this may be one of my issues if not my main issue.
I also adjusted my origin to go front left like you suggested, and I went ahead and turned $22 homing onto 1 so it homes properly.
I’m back to stock settings, I’m trying a project that I have previously cut without skipping issues and about 25 seconds into the project on the bottom left leaf it starts to skip again. I’m not sure if I have a software problem or a mechanical problem at this point.
