How do I cut a rectangle short

I have a rectangle with tabs on both sides. I want to reduce its height (keeping widths same and also keep the size of the tabs same). I am trying to play with the nodes but I am not able to cut any lines using the node edit mode. The nodes just keep converting to straight lines and “t” or “d” keys don’t work or just deletes the entire rectangle! Please advise.
Thank you

Depending on the shape and what I was attempting…

If it’s a closed path and I just wanted to make the panel a little shorter, I’d draw a wide rectangle and subtract it from the existing shape with the boolean tool.

You have to insert a new node before you clip the old node.
start with original

insert new nodes where you want to make the changes

delete the node on the left side (order does not matter)

delete the node on the other side

done!

You can also select more than a single node at a time, then use your arrow keys or simply drag using the mouse, to move all selected nodes to adjust the side of your shape.
