I have two PC’s one for design and one for production, since the production pc is the one that runs the laser the layer settings the ones that are tested to work with different materials. The problem is the layer settings on the design PC are different. I tried to Export/Import perfs but the layer settings didn’t change. Is there some way to sync both computers?
The laser settings on a LightBurn project are stored with the project and will transfer over. If they appear different to you between the two computers make sure that you’re not comparing different speed units. The absolute speeds should be the same in spite of appearing different due to different units being used.
Change the units used in Edit->Settings if that’s the issue.
Do this to fix that:
It’s not a real-time synchronization, but if you have a fairly constant setup, one-and-done should put both machines on the same page.
Network storage.
installing a NAS on your network for storing files that need to be shared will make life so much easier.
With the caveat that LightBurn seems to have a significant problem with multiple simultaneous instances writing shared files, to the extent that it’s not recommended.
My setup has files on a server and two PCs, but there’s only one of me and I close the files at the Comfy Desk before opening them at the laser. That level of compulsive behavior doesn’t scale well …
I have never encountered that problem.
- The files are stored on a drive that is only accessed by 1 person.
- This person knows to close out a file prior to opening it on another machine.
Seriously, I have never had an issue using remote storage except for one power outage that corrupted some files that I really, REALLY needed. all of my storage devices and PCs are on UPS backup now.
I don’t use it just for the laser, I use it for our large format printers, embroidery machines, backups etc.
Me, too!
We’re basically another pair of data points, as plenty of folks have reported problems with various forms of file sharing.
A recent thread with observations:
This is one very good reason for assigning read/write privileges to files, folders & users
A read only file can be edited and saved but it has to have a different name, that preserves the original file.
Anyway I still believe that a NAS is the bees knees when it comes to small network filesharing.
You can drive a nail with a rock, however a hammer is better, as long as you have the knowledge & experience to know which end to hold.
Thanks all for the reply’s, although I do use a NAS, that is not my issue. The problem is the layer settings. For instance, layer setting on the production PC (power, speed and even label) do not match that of the design PC so if I save a project on the design PC I have to change all the layer settings before I run the job. I guess I could do it manually but that would require clicking each layer and writing settings the manually reentering, I was hoping for something easier.
That’s not it but your close. As you said " LightBurn project are stored with the project and will transfer over" and that’s the problem. My production PC is the one I use to run the laser but also that is the one I use to test for speed and power so the cut setting are the most currant, so if I save a project on the design PC the settings my be wrong. I don’t need them to be real time synced, I would be happy to just pull them off to a USB and walk them to the design PS, but I don’t know how. Sorry if I sound curt because I really do appreciate your help.Thank You
If that’s the case then I’d suggest you work on building out a material library. Maintain that on your production PC. Once satisfied, copy the material library to the design PC.
I misunderstood the problem.
Are you expecting to open a saved lightburn file and the layers in the saved file to adopt the “default” layer settings on that PC?
Lightburn doesn’t do that.
Lightburn will save the layer settings in the last file that was opened.
If you want to keep those settings you need to create a lightburn job file that uses all of your layers and name it “LAYERS”.
now you have all of the layer settings saved in that job file. You open the file you named layers, let it load and then select new. now you can create a new job file with your layer settings.
If you want to open a job file and change the layer settings to the ones you have saved, you open the file in lightburn and change the layers to the corresponding color of the layers you want to use. then export the job as an svg file. load the layer job file to restore your settings, close the file by selecting new. now import the svg file.
Viola, bob’s your uncle.
it’s not pretty, but it gets the job done.
As mentioned by @berainlb above, I (as I expect most other users) use the material libraries. My material libraries are stored on my NAS (via a mapped drive) and both my laser PC and my design PC are configured to use the same libraries on the NAS. If I make an edit on my laser PC it automatically gets picked up by my design PC.
Now, this won’t work for everyone (although it sounds like you’re already using your NAS to transfer files between PCs), and as has been mentioned many times before, some people have reported major file corruption issues using Lightburn with a cloud drive or a NAS. If you don’t want to risk corruption and potential total loss of your cut settings (or any other LB files you decide to share) you can (again, as mentioned above) copy your material library manually via whatever means is convenient (via NAS, USB stick etc.) or batch files that you run manually to copy your library to and from the NAS. Alternatively you could use something like ‘FreeFileSync’ but, that seems overkill for this particular requirement.
Hope this helps.
