The results are horrible! What am I doing wrong?
What does this look like when produced? The view in ‘Preview’ can be zoomed to see all the detail that will be sent to the laser. At the view you show, LightBurn can not show everything that is in the job. Try zooming to see the details. 
Yes, this is zoomed in a bit, so you can start to see the details. You can zoom in much further to see individual dots.
Said another way, what does this look like when sent and produced with the laser? Have you tried burning this into something yet? Show us. 
Here is the finished product. It turned out pretty good.
