How to close objects to allow fill

There was a similar question posed the other day. While there are a multitude of reasons why something might not be closed the fundamentals remain the same.

Can't seem to find correct Close Shapes solution

There may be a fundamental definition gap in understanding of closed shapes. You have an existing closed rectangle. You have a single line (open) line. These two things can never be joined directly to form a closed shape. A closed shape is comprised of a single unbroken loop of joined line segments. The rectangle fits this definition.
